1989 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham 4 Door Sedan There are differing accounts of the origin of the Caprice name.  One states that it was coined by Bob Lund, Chevrolet's General Sales Manager, after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City.  Another says the car was named after Caprice Chapman, the daughter of auto executive James P. Chapman.  A new Brougham 4 door sedan joined the model line up.  Brougham models featured a 55/45 front seat with armrest, and a new pillow design with velour fabrics.  Broughams featured woodgrain appliqué on its dash fascia, a dome map light, front door courtesy lights and 20oz carpeting.  For consignment, a 1989 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham, with a title verified 59,281 actual miles. This may be how you rolled in 1989 or knew someone who did. Maybe it was your uncle or grandfather, loyal to the GM crest, and moving from Caprice to Caprice about every 10 years. This is a time when most cars were still square and handsome and lofty. Get comfortable, it's really your only option. Exterior Correct Medium Gray Metallic covers all the large straight steel panels of this car. Nice trimmings all around in stainless steel remain shiny and include the grille, front bumper, wheel well molding, wide rocker trim, window surrounds and handles. Composite headlights were still fairly new to the world and gave the car a more modern look. On top is a gray padded landau vinyl padded top complete with the Brougham badge and fleur-de-lis insignia badge within the padding on the C pillar. Nicely squared off long lines make up the design of this example and these remain very straight and rust free.  Four doors, a large trunk, correct badging, and long hood and this would be the last year before it was replaced by a more rounded aero design. Wire wheel covers with thin white wall tires in 15-inch format kept this Caprice grounded and looking good. Wonderfully straight, wonderfully gray, and wonderfully luxurious as one could get short of a Cadillac, but at a fraction of the cost.  Incredibly well kept, the only imperfection we find on the exterior is some scratching on the rocker panel trim, as if someone took a wire brush to it. Interior Perfectly preserved gray velour is covering the door uppers, which are loaded with conveniences like wood veneer, molded sharped off panels and bump outs to those the actuators, toggles and joysticks which operate the conveniences.  All four doors are in wonderful shape.  For the very clean dash front more wood appliqué, gray panels and behind plastic clear covering the instrumentation with the pure 80's font, all lined up in front of the driver. The factory wheel fronts this clean dash and presents in gray as well. In the center is the climate center as well as the factory AM/FM/Cassette radio with an equalizer built in. On the plush gray carpeting sits a stitched velour 55/45 split bench in front, heavily stuffed with a larger pulldown armrest in the center, and in back a full comfortable bench in the same material. Above is a foam formed headliner covered in gray fleece and all is well and very clean for this interior. Drivetrain Under the insulated hood resides a 305ci V8 complete with EFI and a 200R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission with a 10 bolt 2.73 rear axle all factory correct and all very clean and mechanically sound. Power brakes are onboard with front discs and rear drums. Undercarriage Underneath we note surface rust on some heavy metal including the driveshaft, suspension components, and axle, but the remainder is remarkably clean. Suspension consists of coil springs upfront and a 4 link with coil springs on back. A single exhaust travels through a stock style muffler before exiting underneath without fanfare and after some corrugated turns in the tailpipe.  Drive-Ability A like-new car experience right out of the time machine from 1989.  With a turn of t |
